The franchise can buy ipl players for their team in the annual auction that organized by IPL officials or BCCI every year before few months of starting tournament. The franchise that pays the highest bid for the players bags him. The franchise got the cap of the player for the whole period of an IPL session. The IPL auction follows the system of American based franchise-system of hiring players and transfers.

Despite of auction, the other way to acquire player is through trading and buying replacements, buying domestic players and signing uncapped players. The trading can be done with consent of franchise of other team.

In this way the franchise will have to pay the contract price more than earlier one and difference in amount can be shared between the franchises and the player. The squad of league team must not exceed more than 11 foreign players. The franchise has to give equal support to 8 domestic players and two players must be representative of under-22 pool of BCCI. Ravindra Jadeja is the star of this auction for the ipl players 2012 as the team paid $2 million to bought him.

The Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers bid the highest price for him and make him the costliest player of the year but lastly Chennai acquired him. The other stars of IPL 2012 were Mahela Jayawardene and Vinay Kumar with the prices of $1.4 million and $1 million respectively. The franchise picks the best choice from the short list of 144 players. The young players got most precious price as compared to veteran’s players.

The unsold VVS Laxman, James Anderson, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Mark Boucher, Ian Bell, Xavier Doherty and Peter Siddle were some moment of surprise. As no one is ready to buy them in their own base price could be ignorance to these milestones. Almost all Franchises has retains their most players in current session and bought few key players to make strong their team. Some ipl players, who are signed for last season as replacement for few injured players, are retained for IPL Season 5 as Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Sourav Ganguly (Pune Warriors) and David Miller (Kings XI Punjab).
