Hanukkah is a very much celebrated yearly Jewish Festival. This year's Hanukkah 2010 starts on the evening before December 2nd. It is even more expected by the kids, as they are eager about the gifts & money that they would get from their parents, after presenting prayers. Hanukkah means 'dedication' in Jewish language and marks the success of Jewish national survival and liberty.
History of Hanukkah
The Jewish celebration has an exciting history. The meaning of the Hebrew word Hanukkah is dedication. The History of Hanukkah dates back to 2nd century BC, while Antiochus IV Epiphanies, the Greek king was the overlord of Palestine and Syria.

The event honors the rededication of the 'Temple of Jerusalem' by the great Judas McCabe in 165 BC. When the holy temple Menorah was relit, there was only sufficient holy oil to burn for one day. Yet, according to custom, the oil miraculously lasted eight days until more sanctify oil could be found. The custom of receiving gifts on every day of the eight day long celebrations of Hanukkah 2010 is a recent business.

It is thought that since Christians exchange gifts at Christmas, Jewish too started the custom of exchanging gifts other than money at Hanukkah. Usual foods consumed through the festival are mostly fried in oil which is again symbolic to the extraordinary oil that lasted for eight days.
