The Hockey World Cup was started in 1971. The Hockey World Cup also recognized the Hockey World Championships.

Germany has been the most victorious team in the World Cup in recent years. They won consecutive the tournament in 2002 and 2006.

This prestigious event held every four years, bridging the four years between the Summer Olympics. The Hockey World Cup concept launched by Pakistan's Air Marshal Nur Khan. He found a 61 cm. high trophy prepared of gold and silver, and properly presented the trophy to the FIH on March 27, 1971. The first hockey world cup held in Spain was won by Pakistan who defeated Spain 1-0 in the finals.

Men's Hockey world Cup
The men Hockey World Cup was first held in Barcelona, Spain in 1971 and Pakistan won the title. Since then the occasion has traveled to nine countries and seen five different winners hold the Cup up. India previously hosted the Men’s Hockey World Cup in 1982 in Mumbai. 2010 Men’s Hockey World Cup will be held in India (new Delhi) this year. 2010 hockey world cup is the 12the edition of the men’s hockey world cup series.
Women's Hockey World Cup
Women’s hockey world cup has been held since 1974. The contest has been organized by the International Hockey Federation (IHF) since they took over the role from the International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations (IFWHA) in 1983. Since 1986, it has been organized frequently once every four years, in the similar year as the men's competition.
The most successful team of this event is Netherlands, having won the title six times. Netherlands won the first women’s hockey world cup and 2006 world cup.
